Pork Wonderland

One really great thing about being in East Malaysia is that people here do not meddle into other people business much, they are rather open minded and live life along each other regardless of what background the next person may have. How many shops in West Malaysia with this sign "Babi Segar!" (Fresh Pork!)? How many graveyards in West Malaysia that has Chinese and Muslim graveyard situated right next to each other? It is a general consensus that East Malaysia must keep it's doors restricted period.

Nuff' said.

Back to the pork. There is this wonderful place that sells nothing but pork. Barbecue pork to be precise. Ten shops or so sells this and done in such rustic manner. Fire, pork and flip. With a little dip of specially made chili sauce, it tastes heavenly. Serve this along with a few bottle of beer (RM 10 for 3 cans) and dinner is served. This place never fails to be packed. I usually will pack and eat with friends over a movie.

Lotsa pork on the grill!

For those with strict diet, you have no idea what you are missing out. At least have a try and savour it before you take an hour run in the park.

Instant Noodles

What is it about instant noodles that people around me seems to think that it is the most important bare essential food ever? Sure I have cravings once in a blue moon for instant noodles but to think it is survival food? I don't get that. Potato of the modern time? Our ancestors survived on sweet potatoes during the Communist rule and we survive on instant noodles.

I remember when I was in high school, instant noodles seemed to be the staple supper. Put the instant noodle and water into the bowl, pop it into the microwave machine and supper is ready. The instant noodle of choice back then was Indo Mee original flavour. I wonder if it's because the majority of the students were Indonesian.

I guess it's understandable when these people are out at sea. All they need is hot water and in five minutes they have a meal. Short lunch break leaves plenty more time to sleep or continue work. And for those night manning the platform, the instant noodle boxes are good enough substitute for a soft mattress. Lay the boxes on hard steel grating and you have a bed. I've heard they've fought over boxes before...

I can say working offshore has two extreme living conditions, luxurious and spartan. Luxurious living condition like on a drilling rig and spartan on the platform that only has the basic necessities but these are all a question of relative to what.

Cookies

I am turning into the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street... The galley makes the loveliest cookies I've had! Forget Famous Amos, this is the real deal! Crunchy, buttery and moist chocolate pockets. Pure bliss I tell you and the cookie stays fresh, crunchy and warm throughout the day too.

Cookie~~~

The worse thing is, the cookies are placed in a very "strategic" position. It is by the by side of the entrance in a display... Irresistible...

And to top it off, pies. They have pies!!! They display the pies next to the cookies! Are they trying to kill me with such savory temptations?!

Help me...

My new trousers that I bought. I must fit into it! Fit into it without muffin top~~~

Sista Sista In Search of Pai Kuat Wong

Shit! Fuck good man! That was my expression when my teeth sank into the crispy and crunchy outer skin soaked with a sprinkle of sweet sauce and the meat so succulent and tender. Worth the drive to Klang and through countless traffic jams for it. It reminded me of the movie Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.

We were stuffed after eating fried mince meat balls, assam fish, fried fish, pork knuckles in vinegar, tofu with minced pork, pork ribs, water convolvulus, pickled vegetable and seven glasses of soy milk. Its quite a feast for only four of us to eat. Even the shop owner was surprised that we managed to finish them all. What can I say? Good food is wasted if not finished right?

Credit goes to Prof P for bringing us all the way to Klang from KL! He sure knows where to go for good food. Never fail to fill me up with delicious food whenever I'm in KL. You wouldn't believe how many things I can't eat now because he just spoiled them for me with the finest food. Hawker to fine dining, my benchmark has been raised to an impossible level to satisfy anywhere else.

Cook Up A Storm

Celebrating Chinese New Year away from home means I won't be able to see my family, my friends and most importantly eat Chinese New Year food! I want my pork dishes~~~ No point whining about it so my friend and I decided we shall cook pre Chinese New Year dinner last night. We had so much food! It could feed the whole of Africa I reckon.

Take a look at the ingredients I got just for my two dishes, stir fried mixed vegetable and braised chicken with mushroom.

Hmmm fungus, pork, chicken and vegetable~~~

Took me two hours to get those ingredients washed, soaked and cut. Very tiring process but it was worth it. The end products are just yum! Another two hours of cooking later, we got these!

Itadakimas!

Stir fried mix vegetable, braised chicken with mushroom, stir fried asparagus (in the container), herbal chicken soup, dessert and alcohol~~~ With just the three of us eating, we didn't finish the food. I foresee it will feed me for a good week.

But now the nightmare begins...

I hate washing dishes...

I'm so proud of myself for being able to cook Asian dishes! Never knew it was so cheap too! The stuff I bought above total to RM 50.60!!! So cheap, so much and so nice!

I'd like to thank my lovely Doctor for giving me links to the recipes. Love you lots.

Happy Cow Year Everyone~~~

A Bowl-ful Of M&M's

A bowl-ful of M&M's helps the medicine go down or at least that's how it would be if Mary Poppins had M&M's. This is no ordinary M&M's I tell you and no they're not peanut M&M's either. They're Peanut Butter M&M's! The last I could recall, I had these in Aussie but couldn't find it here ever since then.

But as fate would have it, I found them while I was out hunting for candycanes with The Doctor. It was after New Year so no such luck on the candycanes. So I was randomly walking in one of the aisles of this supermarket located in Jaya One and I found Peanut Butter M&M's!!!

Rat Rat getting his little paws on them Peanut Butter M&M's!

Such a delightful treat to have found it being sold in Malaysian shore. I didn't want to open the pack but it's been such a tiring week for me (post viral infection drama) and I just want a nice treat for myself. It's divine combination to eat peanut butter and chocolate together. Yummy!

Do you know what else comes to mind when it comes to peanut butter and chocolate? Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

Hmmm such sinful delights!

Gosh... It's heaven~~~ I should have hunted for it when I was getting my Peanut Butter M&M's... Next time round then. I shall stock up on chocolates.

Addiction To Spice

Food is here really blend. There's nothing like food in KL like hokkien mee, bak kut teh, fried cockles, dim sum and fine dining. Ipoh food, gosh how I miss Ipoh food. Dim sum, Ipoh hor fun, Hakka mee and the hawker food. Then there's Malaccan food, the satay celup, chicken rice balls, mee Siam, pork satay, cendol and Baba food.

Yes I really love my food.

There's a kind of food that I've never tried before in my life. I love my "belacan" and "sambal" but never had anything like this. It's called "lalapan". It's basically raw and boiled vegetables served with "sambal belacan" and a plate of white rice. I like having my "lalapan" with fried fish or fried chicken on the side, I need some sort of meat on my plate.

Instant addiction!

The "sambal belacan" is really one of a kind. Never had I had such spicy food before! What's more, it's highly addictive! It makes me want to have more despite it being extremely spicy to the point of heartbeat racing and perspiration working on overtime. I get this high eating it and it's just so spicily delicious! There's just no way to describe it but to try it for yourself. Extreme deliciousness~~~

See, everyone of us has a hidden sadomasochism.

Balls Balls Balls

Glutinous rice balls that is in conjunction to the Winter Solstice celebration. I've always been a fan of tang yuan (汤圆). So simple yet so delicious and comforting to eat. Good balance of the sugary sweet and spicy ginger in the soup compliments the plain taste of the glutinous rice balls.

My family isn't one of those that practises Chinese celebration such as this so it came to me as a shocked when my housemates made tang yuan yesterday. I didn't know it was yesterday specifically and I've never made them before too. Never knew it was so simple to make and well it was fun. I can see how it can bring the whole family together. Sit around the table, chatting while rolling up the glutinous rice balls.

Little white and pink balls of joy.

My housemates invited some of their friends over to make and eat tang yuan. It was a nice small gathering. Lots of laughter and story telling. It brings warmth and joy to this house that we rent. As much as I love my peacefulness and serenity, it doesn't hurt to have some racket to liven things up a little. I'm not that antisocial when I'm at home.

Happy Winter Solstice everyone.

And guess what, Chinese New Year is only a month away.

Enough!

There's a big difference living offshore and living onshore. It's not offshore being middle of nowhere cause this city doesn't have much it might as well be in the middle of nowhere. It's the not-having-to-think-what-to-eat when I get back to the living quarters after a long, hard, sweaty day of work (and the laundry service is awesome too!). Even though the food isn't all that great and they tend to taste the same after awhile, it's something to eat. Not to mention, the fridge is always stocked with fruit juices and milk. Milk is bloody expensive here...

After two days of being onshore, I've had enough of thinking what to eat. Having five singles staying in a house, the fridge is rather empty and thinking where to eat out is such a chore. So I decided to make my favourite comfort food, Tuna Pasta Salad. Been ages since I cooked something and I miss cooking terribly!

So here's what you need.

I missed out the eggs.

It's really simple to do it. So simple in fact, I don't think it is considered as cooking. Boil the eggs and pasta. Dice the capsicum, celery and onion. Finely chop the garlic. Drain the corn, pea and tuna of their water and put everything into a mixing bowl. Add enough mayonaise to make it creamy. Add in some salt, pepper and dry Thyme. Mash the eggs once it is hard boiled and add it in. Mix them well and add in the pasta. Mix them again. Leave it in the fridge to chill. Some cheese would be awesome too.

Then tadaa. Ready to eat.

My lovely comfort food in a mug.

Bounty Of The Sea

Day ten of me being offshore and guess what excitement happened besides bumming around since there's totally nothing to do due to some technical problems. Food! Not just any food but food straight from the sea. Delicious, free and fresh. A flogger's wet dream.

It's a freaking huge ass lobster!

Yummy!

I have never seen such huge lobster in my life, let alone a live one. Never knew they are this colourful. Just look at the colour. So vibrant and bright. Looks like a spider. A very delicious spider. Hehehehe.

The guys decided to boil it and eat it just like that. Nothing fancy. We don't have a top notch kitchen on the platform you see. Just plain old dip the lobster into boiling hot water and eat. And boy, it was the best lobster ever! Extremely sweet and bursting with flavour. Just divine.

I've seen many sorts of fishes around the platform and they are huge and yummy! Turtles too. They stay around the platform for food and shelter. I've yet to see dolphins. There are somewhere apparently. It's almost like I work in Aquaria with all these marine animals.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

It is unquestionable that the best chicken rice is made by Hainanese. It's all in the method of which they prepare the chicken, the rice and the chilly sauce. All these are mandatory to make the perfect gastronomic experience. Tilt this delicate balance and all is ruined.

So when my friend suggested that we have Hainanese Chicken Rice for lunch, I was a little skeptical. My mom makes one mean ass Hainanese Chicken Rice, family pride and joy secret recipe. So this place had better be real good.

Loke Yun Restaurant located deep in Ampang territory (158, Jalan Besar, Ampang). You can Wikimapia search Loke Yun and it'll show you where it is located. This place serves pretty good Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Loke Yun Restaurant and that's the owner on the left.

Here's what we ordered, half a steamed chicken (each bird is 2 kg), baby Romanian lettuce and bean sprout. The chicken serving is huge for even the three of us. Taste wise, everything was just right. Just savoury enough, tender and succulent meat. Then comes the sauces sprinkled all over it.

Steamed Chicken.

Some sort of vegetable dishes is a must when eating chicken rice. Usually I'd order cold bean curd too but we didn't order it this time round. The baby Romanian lettuce and bean sprout that we ordered were just perfect. They were boiled for just the right amount of time for it to cook but maintaining it's crunch. These too were sprinkled with various sauces.

Baby Romanian lettuce (yau mak) in various sauces.

Bean sprout in various sauces.

I like the chilly sauce that they make. Unlike other places where it is diluted with water more than anything. They made it well because of the generous amount of chicken stock and chicken oil blended with the chilly and garlic. The bowl next to the chilly sauce is blended ginger. It's a lovely combination.

Chilly sauce and blended ginger.

Lastly, the rice is extremely good. Very fragrant with chicken stock and not too lumpy or dry. Came to our table piping hot and gave us good sized serving too.

I like it how that they used pretty painted porcelain plates and bowls. There's just more satisfaction eating from it somehow and pleasing to the eye too.

Now to some, this place may be a tad expensive. Not cutthroat expensive but just a little more pricey than your usual chicken rice. It amounted to RM 40 for the three of us including drinks but it's actually not bad considering the big serving that they gave us and most importantly, it's good food.

I'll definitely come back to this place for more. I recommend that you should go and give it a try too.

Durian Season Is Back!

My favourite fruit of all time is back and mommy bought one this morning. It was a real good buy. The meat was thick and extremely full of the yummy durian flavour. It was extremely sweet, so tender and melt with every bite. Great way to start the day but at the same time horrible way to start because no amount of mints will wash the bad breath away.

Hmmm thorny delight.

Since durian season is back, I thought I might share some tips with you guys. I hate eating with my fingers for the sole reason, my fingers will smell of what I just ate. Let it be banana leaf rice or "nasi lemak", my fingers will smell of it no matter how much I wash it. Same applies for durian. It is impossible to get rid of it using conventional soap.

I discovered a very uncanny solution to this persistent stink of a problem. Durian shell. No not pierce your hands with it. Put the shell (the thorny part) under a running water and wash your hands with it that water. Sounds simple enough but it works like a charm. Not sure if it'll work for washing down bad durian breath.

We believe that durian are "heaty" food. Meaning, it rises the body's temperature and it does. Eat enough and it might just give you a fever and sore throat (to some people). So my mom will put some salt on the white part of the shell where the fruit was contained, mix it with some water and drink it from there. It is believe to mitigate the heat. This is not proven but I just drink it anyways.

Another method to mitigate the heat is to eat mangosteen while eating durian. Mangosteens are "cooling" food so it'll cool you down. I just eat them cause I like them. Cooling effect would be a side effect for my love of eating mangosteens. Delicious fruits. Yum!

So there, three hopefully helpful tips for you to enjoy your durians.

To those who haven't tried durian because of the pungent smell, you don't know what you're missing. It may smell like Hell but it sure taste like Heaven.

Brownies Anyone?

This is by far the weirdest craving ever. Not eating brownies but baking them. Is it my hidden talent or my alter ego trying to call out to me? That I, this nothing else better to do blogger, is going to be the world's famous pastry chef? I doubt that. I just wanted to bake something.

But first, a confession. I know nuts about baking. Having said that, I know what makes good brownies. Meet Betty Crocker! Instant brownie mix! Love it.

Gotta love modern technology for this.

But before that, you'll need some ingredients. Two eggs, three table spoons of water and three quarter of a slab of butter (it says use oil but for soft and moist dough, use butter). Melt the butter and let it cool.

Pour out the mix and put the ingredients in like so.

It looks like concrete mixture to me...

Mix them really well and pour it into baking pan. Usually people use a square or rectangle baking pan but I only have a 10 inch round one.

Preheat the oven at 225 degrees Celsius for about ten minutes then pop in the baking pan into the oven for about 25-30 minutes. Depending on the size of the baking pan.

T-Minus 30 minutes.

T-Minus 15 minutes.

Use a chopstick or a toothpick to make sure that it is thoroughly baked.

The final product.

Best to let the brownie cool and settle so that it becomes dense. Warm brownie with a glass of cold milk. Mmmm. Warm brownie with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Mmmm.

China Burger?

Introducing a new breed of burger, China Burger! My eyes were literally like this "O.o" when my dad first brought it home from a night market. Surprisingly, it's very nice and unique. It's not your normal definition of a burger, that's for sure. The night market is located here, on Jalan 46b/26, every Thursday evening.

Back to China Burger. What's so special about it? Well for one, it doesn't use bread or have vegetables garnishing it. First they crack an egg into the cylindrical hole, add in the meat (pork or chicken) then pour some sort of batter onto it.

China Burger in the making.

A few flips here and there then tadaa, China Burger.

Mmmm China Burger.

It's weird to bite into a burger that has two different texture consistencies. The dough and the fried egg. But it is yummy and it's one of my must haves when getting food from this night market. And it's cheap too, RM 1.40 each.

Night Of The Glitz And The Glam I

Many things went on during the Made of Honour event in JW Marriott so I'm gonna blog it in two parts. The first part is the food they served us. I am glad I managed to get a hold on a pair of passes. It was an extremely lavish affair.

While waiting for the doors to open into the hall, waiters barraged guests with free flowing fruit juices, whiskey on rocks and sparkling wine with a strawberry in it (I was convinced that it was champagne too...). Of course I camwhored while waiting and sipping my free flowing alcohol but those photos will be on the next post.

No I didn't get all bimbotic drunk this time. I was being a good boy.

My passes~~~

As expected from JW Marriott, the food served were amazing.

The first dish is my favourite! What a way to start the 8 course meal with a bang. The duck was absolutely delicious and super tender and that fried basket thing, I went nuts cause I absolutely love them!

Pineapple Chutney with Smoked Duck, Seared Tiger Prawns with Tomato Salsa enhanced with Kerabu Mangga.

I love the soup. It reminded me of the soup that my aunt cooks during Chinese New Year but of course it had more stuff in it than this. It was delicious none the less.

Shredded Chicken and Bamboo Pith Soup.

I'm not a fan of this though it was alright. It's partly because the fried yam was already cold and soft. I like my fried yam hot and crispy. Love the curried mushroom.

Sauteed Julienne of Seafood with Curried Mushroom Cream Sauce served in Yam Ring.

I love my seafood and this sea bass was amazing! Steamed and topped with Thai Sauce is just superb! It was a perfect blend of flavours. The Chinese Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice, otherwise known as "lo mai gai" wasn't that nice though. Best leave that to dim sum shops instead.

Steamed Sea bass with Thai Sauce accompanied with Chinese Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice.

This odd looking mashed potato on asparagus is actually roasted chicken! Very interesting flavour and very tender and juicy. Love it.

Roasted Chicken Parcel on Pencil Asparagus served with Percik Sauce.

I haven't had risotto in ages since the last time I was in Aussie visiting my sis. I'm a fan of risotto and that night I satisfied my hidden craving for risotto. Very creamy and rich, just how I like it.

Saffron Risotto with Buttered Baby Carrots.

The meal ended with a serving of Haagen Dazs. By this time I was already very full. I only took two bite just for taste. I love it even though the rest didn't like the chocolate moist cake.

Chocolate Moist Cake with Fruits Coulis Tropical Fresh Fruits served with Haagen Dazs.

It was a fantastic event! The food were awesome and I was very happy with the service. I'd love to attend another party in JW Marriott. Just superb! Though I have one regret, I didn't have enough sparkling wine...

Stay tune for the second part of the event.

Goodies From Abroad

I love it when La Fashion Designer comes back from London. He always brings something back for us to try. The last time was Krispy Kreme which was divine. Makes Dunkin Donut seem like rubbish and J.Co and Big Apple is just so so... I'd kill for another Krispy Kreme.

This time he brought the most delicious and sinful cupcakes ever. This cupcake is gazillion times better than Cupcake Chic. Cupcakes from Hummingbird Cafe located on Portobello Road, London. It is called Red Velvet. Honestly, they should have called it the Red Death or something because it's just so divine!

Red Velvet with delicious cheese icing.

The icing is absolutely yummy! I've never tasted anything like this. It's sweet but not sickeningly sweet and here's the lovely part, it's cheese flavour! Never had anything like this before! Y-U-M-M-Y!

Check out the redness of it!

After I had the whole cupcake to myself, I started getting sugar rush and kept giggling like a school girl. It was embarrassing. Almost like when I'm drunk. The bimbotic drunk...

Like that wasn't fattening enough, he also brought this. Marks & Spencer Mini Bites. Just read the description! Ra-ra-ra chocolate, ra-ra-ra chocolate and in ra-ra-ra chocolate. Triple chocolate in a single tiny mini bite. This is bio hazard...

I heart Marks & Spencer products!

Just look at the chocolate coating! It's so rich just looking at it and I with that one bite, you'll know this is the real deal of fine chocolate. Delicious! The inside is just as lovely. Moist chocolate cake. Thank goodness they don't sell it here or else I'll stock up my room with this. In case of a nuclear winter you know.

Yummy Mini Bites!

I'm currently going through a phase of Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl. It's the scarf thing. I heart scarf! They're like the perfect accessory for any occasion! A plain t-shirt is just too plain without accessory. Throw on a scarf and it looks a ton better. Me hearts scarf.

Breakfast With Azzuro

After eating the food I stocked up for a week, this morning Azzuro brought me out for a proper breakfast meal. Not that I'm displeased with my food. I love my cereals, bread, tuna, peanutbutter and milk but the breakfast was yummy! Nothing like grease and oil to satisfy one's hunger.

This morning's breakfast was in Menglembu morning market. I wasn't too sure what to have so I ordered what Azzuro ordered, Fried Kway Teow. This market is famous for this and the wait for our order was long. Many customers ordered from them too. Very popular. But it was worth the wait. It was really good.

Fried Kway Teow and Yellow Noodle.

Just look at the prawns. So fat and juicy. Very generous of them to give us four pieces of prawns. Mmmm it was fresh too, so the flesh was very springy. The prawns were just superb.

Fried Kway Teow.

I like my fried kway teow with cockles. Even the cockles were huge and they were literally oozing with cockle juice (that sounded wrong...)! Usually the fried kway teow I have, the egg would be all shredded but not this time. It was only partly shredded and the yoke was kept whole and semi raw. So the yoke was kinda oozy, just how I like my eggs. Sunny side up is the way to go.

We also ordered Chee Cheong Fun Ipoh style. Here they put many different sauces to add fragrant and flavour to the bland tasting chee cheong fun. Different sorts of chilly sauces, sesame oil and other sauces. Not forgetting the pickled green chillies. Delicious!

Chee Cheong Fun with Pork Skin.

To complete the chee cheong fun, we ordered it with pork rind cooked in curry on the side. I could live on this for the rest of my life. Yummy.

Now, wouldn't you say that was a stomach full and sinful breakfast?

Mmmm Meat

I love my meat very much. All sorts of meat. Beef, pork, chicken, lean and toned boys or any other sort of meat. Yummy. So when I was at McD and saw a new promotion of a Big Mac, I just had to try it. Curiosity got the best of me. Who wouldn't with a name such as Mega Mac? The bigger the better right?

My "healthy" medium set.

Ordered it I did. A medium set. One Mega Mac, one medium fries and of course my favourite Light Coke. Gotta cut those out calories wherever I can. Zero calorie and its refillable! Yes McD does refill, just go to the counter and ask for it.

So what's a Mega Mac?

This is a Mega Mac. Nice packaging.

Mmmm Mega Mac~~~

And tadaa.

Four layers of meat patty!

It is a essentially a double Big Mac! Four layers of juicy meat patty~~~

But that is all that's special about the Mega Mac. I felt a little disappointed. All that hype for nothing... Should have stuck with my regular order, Spicy Chicken McDeluxe instead. I love my Spicy Chicken McDeluxe. Juicy spicy chicken meat chunks.

Hakka Mee - Ipoh

As surely as all girls have their monthly "Auntie Visit", JC will come visit me and take me away from Notroh Woods in search of good food to eat once a month. This time its Hakka Mee for breakfast in Ipoh ! I love all these old colonial shop lots. They usually have the best hawker food.

This coffee shop is located at the intersection of Jalan Iskandar and Jalan Dato Tahwil Azhar. Its hard to miss it with its huge sign. Plus its a corner lot shop with lots of people queuing.

Look out for this sign.

Eventhough it was around 0930 when we got there, the place was pack with patrons. We didn't have to wait long for a table. People here eat fast and leave. So no worries when you see a queue.

Maestro at work.

What's so special about Hakka Mee?

Its the noodles that they serve and the minced pork along with various oil that was used as the sauce. Its a cross between kway teow and la mian. Its smaller than kway teow but has the texture of la mien called mee pok. I've had this noodle before but none of them are as delicious as this.

Minced pork and noodle.

But to eat just that is rather dry, boring and plain. You'll need to have it with soup! Not just any plain soup. Soup with beancurd stuffed with fishpaste, pork balls and fishballs.

Balls and beancurd to your hearts delight.

The food here is freakishly cheap! Single Mee (small) is RM 1.80, One Half Mee (medium) is RM 2.40 and Double Mee (large) is RM 3.00. The beancurd stuffed with fishpaste, pork ball and meat ball costs Rm 0.50 each.

An Ipoh breakfast is not complete unless you have it with Ipoh's White Coffee.

Now that's what I call a proper breakfast. Yum!
